Career Talk with Fabian Maillard, Team Leader Local Transport at Furrer+Frey AG

Hi Fabian, who are you and what do you do professionally?

My name is Fabian Maillard, and I am Team Leader Local Transport at Furrer+Frey. I am responsible for all tram and trolleybus projects in Switzerland. This includes the planning, coordination, and implementation of overhead contact line systems.

How did you come to work at Furrer+Frey?

I joined Furrer+Frey somewhat unexpectedly. I was looking for a job and started as a draftsman 13 years ago. Over time, I was able to grow within the company and today, I lead my own team.

What makes Furrer+Frey a special company?

Furrer+Frey has been building overhead contact lines for more than 100 years and has gained extensive experience in this field. We act as a general contractor, which means we cover all project phases—from development and planning to installation—both in Switzerland and abroad. We’ve had the opportunity to carry out projects on every continent.

Why might your field be interesting for young people?

Our field is very attractive for young people because it involves tackling technical challenges while also discovering different parts of the world. The projects are highly diverse, and you can see the results of your own work in everyday life.

What fascinates you personally about your job?

What fascinates me is being able to see the results of my work every day. When I drive through a city and see a tram running beneath an overhead line that my team planned and installed, it’s incredibly fulfilling. It feels great to contribute to something lasting that supports public transport.

Which skills are especially important in your job?

Besides technical knowledge, social skills are also key. We work in interdisciplinary teams and are often in close contact with clients, authorities, and other partners. So, in addition to a strong technical sense, communication skills are just as important.

What advice would you give to young people who want to enter the rail industry?

I’d encourage young people to stay open-minded and curious. The rail industry is extremely diverse—you should take the chance to explore different areas. It helps not just when starting out but also with your long-term development.

Thank you and all the best!
