Career Talk with Peter Herren, Head of Network Development at BLS Netz AG

Hello Peter, could you please introduce yourself briefly?
My name is Peter Herren, and I am Head of Network Development at BLS Netz AG.

What fascinates you most about your work in public transport?
What fascinates me about public transport or the railway system is its complexity. It’s like a gear mechanism that has to fit together perfectly. Only when everything is synchronized does it run smoothly. There are many interactions and dependencies – understanding and working with them is incredibly exciting.

How do you experience collaboration within the industry?
The public transport sector is very well connected. People know each other, which makes many things easier. This creates numerous opportunities to grow within the industry and actively shape your career. Once you’re in this field, you can move in many different directions.

What advice would you give to young people at the start of their careers?
As a graduate, it’s okay to fail sometimes. The first job doesn’t have to be the final one. The important thing is to try things out. If you realize something isn’t right for you, at least you’ve learned that this path isn’t yours. No missed opportunity will block your future.

Were there any stages in your career that particularly shaped you?
During my career, I had the opportunity to take part in various talent programs. That was very valuable for me. I was given a stage – and I was told that I decide what I perform on that stage. This mindset still shapes me today, and I try to pass it on to others.

What’s the best way to enter the public transport industry?
Anyone interested in joining the public transport industry should take initiative – reach out through acquaintances, HR representatives, or professional networks. I recommend attending industry events and fairs. Many schools and universities also organize such events. Go there, make contacts, connect through social media, and find your entry point.

What does your work mean to you personally?
For me, public transport is a sustainable product. I can fully stand behind it and have the opportunity to actively help shape it. I especially value working with university graduates – we can make their entry easier, and at the same time, we benefit from their fresh perspectives and critical questions. It helps us all move forward.

Thank you very much for your insights, Peter!
